Editorial Review This is a Hobby Boss 1/48 scale assembly and painting required plastic model kit of the Grumman F8F Bearcat, a single-engine carrier based aircraft introduced just before the end of World War II. Model kit features: Engraved panel lines, well appointed cockpit, full twin-row P&W R-2800 radial engine with motor mounts and firewall, highly detailed undercarriage and wheel wells, your choice of folded or extended wings, 2-piece canopy and external stores (bombs (x2), rockets (x4), and centerline drop tank with sway braces). Decals for 2 US Navy aircraft: BuNo 95081 of VF-3, 1946 and BuNo 95187 'Beetle Bomb', 1949 - includes instrument panel markings and stencil data. *ABOUT THE F8F BEARCAT: The Grumman F8F was introduced in 1945 and the Bearcat or "Bear", as it was affectionately called, had originally been slated to replaced the smaller F4F Wildcat and the possibly the venerable F6F Hellcat. The F4F Bearcat was designed around the same Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine, which help turned the F6F Hellcat and the F4U Corsair into exceptional naval fighter aircrafts. The smaller Bearcat, however, was 20 percent lighter than its big brother the Hellcat, and as the result, it had a 30 percent better rate of climb and was some 50 mph faster than its predecessor. The Bearcat was almost as fast as the speedy F4U Corsair, and compared to the Corsair, the Bearcat had better climb rate and was more maneuverable. The F8F Bearcat was also the first U.S. Navy aircraft to be fitted with a bubble canopy, which offered 360 degree visibility. All in all, the F8F was an excellent fighter aircraft, and had it made it in time to see combat in World War II, the powerful little F8F Bearcat would likely have enjoyed similar success as the Hellcat. As it turned out, the F8F Bearcat went into service at the dawn of the "Jet Age", and it was the last piston-engine aircraft produced by Grumman.
