① What is Peshtemal / Turkish Towel?

✔ Turkish Towels are made from Turkish Cotton, a premium cotton that has extra long fibers. Using longer fiber cotton means fewer joins, which results in stronger and smoother cotton threads. Because of this unique material, Turkish towels are known to become even softer, fluffier and more absorbent with successive washings.

② How are Turkish Towels different from "regular" towels?

✔ The biggest difference is the type of weave. A Turkish towel is a flat weave where a "regular" towel is a terry cloth (loop weave). The flat weave allows the towel to be compact, super absorbent and fast drying. Exclusive District Towels are 100% Turkish Cotton which get softer and more absorbent over time vs. a terry cloth towel that can get stiff and scratchy with prolonged use.

③ Are they traditional?

✔ The history of the peshtemal is closely tied to the history of Hamams. The first Turkish Hamams, or public baths, were built in the 14th century, drawing on inspiration from Roman baths.

✔ The peshtemal became more culturally significant in the 17th century. In the Ottoman palace, the royal women and courtiers wanted peshtemals that were increasingly beautiful and ornate. They hired weavers to design beautifully decorated peshtemals. These peshtemals were hand-woven from cotton on a loom.

✔ Over the 17th century and afterwards, peshtemals were made in a wide range of styles and designs. They grew beyond their origins as a towel for the Turkish baths became an item of both fashion and utility.
