Typed Letter signed: "Russell", 1 page, 7¼x10½. New York, N.Y., November 4, no year. To "Dear Saul" [Goodman], in full: "You have obviously been delving back into antiquity. Thanks for sending those photographs of me, when the heart was young and gay. I'm happy to say the heart is still young and gay, but the rest of the anatomy sure as hell as undergone a terrific change since those pictures were snapped. Do you realize it was just about twenty years ago when those things were taken? TIME MARCHES ON! Last time I saw you - that brief encounter on the street, you were looking just as brand new as ever. You must live right - or hold the right thoughts. The 'salad days are over and I'm now becoming a character actor on television. Sure would like to get into a play again, but am grateful for being kept so busy on TV. Thanks again for the photos, and the best to you always." Russell Hardie (1904-1973) appeared in supporting young man roles in films of the 1930s, including Broadway to Hollywood (1933) and Garbo's Camille (1937). After concentrating on stage acting for the next fifteen years, he began appearing frequently on TV playhouses and an occasional series in the 1950s. He played character roles in the movies Fail Safe (1964) and The Group (1966). Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. Goodman usually collected signed photographs, but also preserved this interesting signed letter. He had evidently sent photos to Hardie to be autographed, but those are not included here. Normal mailing folds. Lightly frayed at top and bottom edge. Slightly creased. Slightly toned at bottom edge.
