What is Nishijin-Ori (brocade)?

Nishijin brocade is the generic name for 'yarn-dyed patterned textiles produced in Kyoto (Nishijin), which are characterised by high-mix, low-volume production'. It was designated a national traditional craft on 26 February 1976. Textile stores in Nishijin have been making efforts to develop their creativity and expressiveness to create excellent designs, in addition to refining the high techniques that have been accumulated since the Heian period.

What is Nishijin?

('Nishijin' is the common name for the area stretching from Kamigyo-ku to Kita-ku, Kyoto. The area known as Nishijin is home to many textile companies and factories. Nishijin-ori, or 'Nishijin brocade' in English, is a well-known brand of local silk textiles. The area has been called Nishijin since the Onin War in the 15th century, when the Western Army set up camp around this area).
