The Derby gives us the chance to spend genuine quality time with our kids while also teaching them important lessons about safely handling tools, the physics of motion, the effects of friction and drag, the difference in density of materials, and the importance of design & execution.... The other lessons we ALL learn are good sportsmanship, fair competition, teamwork, grace in the face of defeat, and if we are skilled and have a bit of luck, the thrill of victory!!!! The acceleration due to gravity is a constant. The more mass, the greater the force acting to accelerate your racer. This force is competing against the forces exerted by aerodynamic drag and friction, so you want as much mass as possible to increase acceleration force.... Official Rules limit Pinewood Cars to a maximum weight of 5 ounces, but check the rules for your local contest to be sure.... Most Pinewood Cars weigh between 1.5 oz & 3.5 oz (depending on design) without any added weights, so a Pinewood Car may need up to 3.5 oz of extra weight.... The heavier your car is, the faster it’ll be, but the location of that weight makes a difference.... The best placement for center of gravity is 1/4" to 1" in front of the rear axle. Go too far forward and you lose potential energy, too far back & your car will lift its front end..... Tungsten is best for this because it’s so dense, allowing for precise placement & tuning....
