The indoor outdoor speaker cabinet performs a similar function for the vibrating parts of a speaker. Without the enclosure, even the best stereo speakers would sound thin and shaky. Virtually all mid bass would be missing without the speaker box walls.

Subwoofers should not be used without a cabinet, as they require a cabinet to balance the front and rear frequencies being emitted. Using car subwoofer boxes & enclosures without a ported or sealed cabinet can result in negligible sound.

Closed indoor outdoor speaker box enclosures are, as the name implies are completely sealed. These enclosures are made completely airtight and are usually lined with sound-absorbing material. They are designed to trap the rear sound radiation and allow only the front sound radiation to exit the speaker box unit.

Tweeters:

Super Tweeter mostly comes in housing and don't need enclosures. Midrange drivers need only their chamber, mainly to separate them from the woofer so that the pressure from the woofer does not disturb the cone of the midrange driver, but volume should not be neglected, as it does affect the sound signature.
